'Earth's Fury'

EARTH'S FURY

Earth’s Fury is an exciting topic that explores both natural disasters and the different states of matter, like solids, liquids, and gases. You’ll learn about the science behind natural disasters—what causes them, what they do, and how they affect the world around us.

In South Wales, we have many types of landscapes and weather, which help us see real examples of these powerful events. For example, in 2020, Storm Dennis brought heavy rain and caused serious flooding in the River Taff and River Ely, affecting Cardiff and nearby towns. One of the most tragic events in Welsh history was the Aberfan disaster in 1966, when a coal waste pile collapsed onto a school, causing great loss and sadness. We’ve even had an earthquake! In 1984, the Llŷn Peninsula was shaken by one, showing that the ground beneath us can move too.

Learning about these natural forces helps us understand how the Earth works and why it's so important to look after our planet, especially as climate change and human actions are worsening some of these events.
