Additional Learning Needs in Wales - what's happening?

The ALN Act and wider ALN Transformation Programme will transform the separate systems for special educational needs (SEN) in schools to create a unified system for supporting learners from 0 to 25 with ALN.

Dear Parents / Guardians,

From September 2021, the current Special Educational Needs framework will be replaced with a new and reformed system called - Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act.

All schools in Wales will be required to make changes to their current systems. We are currently working in collaboration with Cardiff County to ensure a smooth transition to the new ALNET Act.

The additional learning needs (ALN) system is being put in place between September 2021 and August 2024. This guide explains how some children will move to the ALN system between September 2021 and August 2022. Separate guidance will be published that explains how other children and young people will move to the ALN system.
